1. Ministry of Education has released latest edition of “All India Survey on Higher Education” (AISHE) 2019-2020. As per the survey, number of institutions of national importance have increased to 135 which accounts for 80 percent in last five years. According to survey, number of institutions of national importance have increased to 135 in 2020 from 75 in 2015. Gender parity Index has also improved. Number of PhDs has increased by 60 per cent since 2015. Number of students pursuing PhD in 2019-20 was 2.03 lakh while in 2014-15 it was 1.17 lakh. AISHE report is published by Ministry of Education since 2010-11.
2. India wind energy market outlook was released by Global Wind Energy Council. As per the report, India has a pipeline of 10.3 GW in Central and State markets. These pipelines will drive installations until 2023. Report highlights India will install 20 GW of wind energy capacity by 2021-25. GWEC was established in 2005. It provides credible and representative forum for entire wind energy sector at international level. Its mission is to ensure that, wind power is established as the leading energy sources in world, providing several environmental and economic benefits, India’s total installed wind power capacity was 38 GW, as of February 2021.
3. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will assist development projects in Northeast through Space Technology. ISRO will offering optimum utilization of Satellite Imaging and other Space Technology applications. These applications will be used for better accomplishment of infrastructural projects across all eight states in North Eastern Region of India. Six out of eight states of Northeast have already sent their specific proposals to ISRO. Sikkim and Assam will send their proposals soon. ISRO’s involvement would be first of its kind project in India, where there is an institutionalised involvement of ISRO to map and share data for developmental projects.
4. China has passed a new legislation against foreign sanctions. With this law China seeks to build its defences against rising US and EU pressure on trade and human rights. Chinese law has following countermeasure provisions: Refusal to issue visas, denial of entry & deportation. Sealing, seizing, and freezing property of individuals and businesses which is attached to foreign sanctions against Chinese businesses or officials Restrictions can also be applied to family members of individuals who fall foul of China. It allows Chinese courts to punish companies complying with foreign laws that damage national interests.
5. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have developed an early cyclone detection technique which will help in early detection of development or strengthening of tropical cyclones in North Indian Ocean region. IIT developed this technique using Eddy detection technique. It will investigate formative stages and advance detection time of tropical cyclogenesis. This technique was studied under Climate Change Program with support from Department of Science and Technology. The technique was developed with the aim of identifying initial traces of pre-cyclonic eddy vortices in atmospheric column.
